Checking Subtraction Using Addition Beyond 100
We can check whether the answer of subtraction is correct we will add the difference of the two numbers with the number that was subtracted.
After performing the addition we will the number from which the number was subtracted.
Let us consider the following example;
Subtract 36 from 75. and check the result
We will perform subtraction as shown below
256 - 74 = ?
We will perform the required operation
As we have to subtract 74 from 256 we will perform the following steps
Step 1: Subtract the ones first.
6 ones - 4 ones = 2 ones.
Step 2: Subtract the tens
5 tens - 7 tens
As 5 is less than 7 so we will subtract the tens by regrouping.
1 hundred 5 tens = 15 tens
15 tens - 7 tens = 8 tens.
Step 3 : Now subtract the hundreds
1 hundred - 0 hundred = 1 hundred
Hence the answer will be 182
Now we check the answer
We will add the difference of the two numbers that is 182 to the number that was subtracted that is 74 as shown below
So 182 and 74 are added .
The answer is 256.
This is the number from which 74 was subtracted.
This shows that the subtraction has been performed correctly
